Washing removes what sits on the surface. Decontamination removes what has bonded to it. Here is what iron removers and clay bars do — and why they come before polishing.

Short answer: Iron remover is a chemical that dissolves embedded metal particles like brake dust. A clay bar mechanically pulls off bonded contaminants that washing leaves behind. Together they decontaminate the paint so it is truly clean before polishing or coating.

Why it exists: Even a perfectly washed car can still feel gritty. That roughness is bonded contamination sitting in and on the clear coat — and it has to go before any protection is applied.

What Iron Remover Does

Iron remover is a chemical decontaminant. Sprayed onto paint and wheels, it reacts with embedded iron particles — mostly brake dust and rail dust — and dissolves them, often turning purple as it works. These particles are too small to wash off and will keep corroding and staining if left in place. Chemical decontamination reaches into the paint in a way a wash mitt cannot.

What a Clay Bar Does

A clay bar (or clay mitt) is mechanical decontamination. Glided over a lubricated surface, it grabs and pulls out bonded contaminants that sit above the clear coat — overspray, tree sap mist, industrial fallout, and stubborn road film. After claying, paint that felt like sandpaper feels glass-smooth. Clay handles what chemicals leave behind.

The Correct Order

Decontamination follows a sequence so each step sets up the next:

  • Wash — remove loose dirt with a safe hand wash.
  • Iron remover — chemically dissolve embedded metal particles.
  • Tar and glue remover — take off any remaining sticky spots.
  • Clay — mechanically pull off the rest of the bonded contamination.
  • Then polish and coat — on a surface that is finally clean.

Why It Comes Before Coating

A ceramic coating bonds to the surface it is applied to. If contamination is still embedded, the coating bonds over the contamination instead of the clear coat — reducing durability and trapping flaws underneath. The same is true before paint correction: claying first prevents dragging bonded grit across the paint during polishing. Skipping decontamination is one of the most common reasons a coating underperforms.
