Short answer: The number of steps describes how many machine-polishing stages your paint needs. More steps remove more defects and refine the finish further, but also take more time and remove more clear coat.

The principle: Each step trades a little clear coat for clarity. The goal is the fewest steps that reach the result you want, not the most.

One-Step Correction

A one-step (or "enhancement") correction uses a single combined compound-and-polish stage. It typically removes around 60–80% of light swirls, wash marring, and haze, and it dramatically improves gloss. It is the best value for daily drivers and cars in fair-to-good condition, or as prep before a coating when the paint is not heavily damaged.

Two-Step Correction

A two-step correction separates the work into a cutting stage to remove deeper defects and a polishing stage to refine the finish and restore clarity. It commonly reaches around 85–95% defect removal and is the usual choice for moderately swirled paint or when you want a noticeably deeper, cleaner finish under a coating.

Three-Step Correction

A three-step correction adds a heavier cutting stage before polishing and a final refining stage. It targets the highest defect removal — often 95%+ — for a show-quality finish on hard paint, dark colors that reveal every flaw, or neglected paint with heavy swirls. It takes the most time and skill.

Why Paint Hardness Changes the Plan

Two cars with identical swirls can need different approaches. Hard clear coats resist cutting and may need a more aggressive combination to correct; soft clears cut quickly but mar easily and need careful refining. This is why a proper job starts with a test spot to dial in the right pads, compounds, and machine speed before committing to the whole car. It also ties directly into which polishing your car actually needs.
